Can an AME become a pilot?

Yes of course, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) become a Pilot. Not necessary, both are different trades in the same airline industry. It would be best to excel in either of the trades.

The Pilot flies the plane, the AME inspects, checks, rectifies the snags on the aircraft, and certifies the aircraft by issuing a “Certificate of Release to Service”. The airplane can be release for flying, only after the AME issues the certificate of release to service.

It is easier for AME to become a pilot, as the DGCA examinations are similar and conducted by the same regulators for Pilots and for AME. The examination patterns and the venue of the examinations are also the same. Sometimes if such AME become Pilots are grounded due to medical or other reasons, they revert back to their old trades as ground engineers AME.

A pilot carries out the preflight check, carries out the refueling, walk around check etc, as per the scope of approval granted to them. Sometimes pilots are granted one time approval to carry out the checks and snag rectification on the aircraft, and subsequently certify the airplane. It would be better if AME becomes a Pilot, as he can carry out such additional duties, and be an asset to the airline.
